Paint the Town
A month-long event, held annually in June/July, giving artists the opportunity to come out of their studios and create their art on location at selected spots in Salem. The paintings do not need to be completed on-site. The event was started in 1998 by Wayne Knowles, and has continued each year since. It is now organized by Artists in Action. Following the on-site painting event, there are awards and a group reception and exhibit. A one-time fee is require to participate in all locations within each calendar year. This fee is separate from membership.

Sixth Annual Paint The Town 2004
Get ready for the 6th annual Paint the Town! From July 1-17, 2004, the public is invited to watch artists outside of their studios creating en plein air. Besides satisfying curiosity, people will learn that there is great salable art available locally. Artists will enjoy the camaraderie of fellow artists and benefit in exposure of their artwork. This year, variety has been emphasized by adding figure drawing to the mix of landscape, garden art, and two art festivals. Locations are as follows:
This event was conceived to promote artists residing in and near Salem and to draw the publics notice to art in Salem. This is a great opportunity to make yourself even more visible as an artist. Media includes any artistic material including 3-D.
The activity is coordinated by Artists in Action and anyone may join and be eligible for the juried show by sending $20 adults; $15, under 18 yrs., to Artists in Action PTT, P.O. Box 2684; Salem, OR 97308-2684.

Scheduled meeting places: Thursday, July 1 - Monmouth City Park, Arts Festival, Main Street The festival booth will tell you where to sign in. This is located off Main Street near Warren Street in Monmouth. 4 8 P.M. Wednesday, July 7 - Downtown Salem Farmers Market; meet at Salem Center entranceway on Liberty & High Streets. 10 A.M. - 3 P.M. Thursday, July 8 - A Creekside Garden Inn, a Bed & Breakfast located off Center St. between 14th & 17th on Wyatt Court. A model is available if you wish to include her in artwork. 11A.M. - 3 P.M. Friday, July 9 - NW Viticulture Center in West Salem. Highway 22 west to Doaks Ferry Road, turn right and follow the winding road to a small Chemeketa sign showing an arrow to turn left. Proceed to the driveway on the left for the Center. 9 A.M.- 4 P.M. Saturday, July 10 - North Salem High School vicinity. Meet at the main entrance on 14th St. near D Street. A model will be available between 11 A.M. - 2 P.M. Monday, July 12 - Mission Mill Museum on Mill St. between 12th & 14th Streets. Meet at the porch before entrance to the main building. Staff will be in costume in several places. 10 A.M. - 4 P.M. Wednesday, July 14 - Minto-Brown Island Park off River Road, South. Meet at Gazebo. 9 A.M. - 3 P.M. Saturday, July 17 - Salem Art Fair, Bushs Pasture Park; meet at the Artists in Action Booth for directions. 10 A.M. - 6 P.M. Thursday, Aug. 26 - Picture delivery deadline to turn in artwork to Elsinore Gallery on High St. off State St. between 9 A.M. - 6 P.M. Please bring at least 3 pieces ready for hanging or display. Contact me if you have 3-D work. Saturday, Aug. 28 - Artwork juried by Terry Isaac, internationally known artist and former teacher. The Elsinore Gallery staff reserve the right to be final jurors of the art pieces to be hung even after selection as the quality and presentation is their concern. Depending upon size, about 20-30 will be selected. A 20% commission will be given to the gallery if artwork is sold at this show. Wednesday, Sept. 1- Reception 5 P.M. and awards 6 P.M. at Elsinore Gallery for Salem First Wednesday event. Refreshments will be served. Awards will include 1st, 2nd, 3rd, place, Peoples Choice, and 2 honorable mentions. Wednesday, Sept. 22 - Pick-up of artwork on display since Sept. 1. Monday., Oct. 25 - All PTT participants are eligible to submit ONE art piece for a second non-juried show at the Salem Public Library for one month. Deliver works to the main front entrance (closed to public) between 11 A.M.- 1 P.M. Pick up will be Nov. 29. |
